ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The certificate program is open to matriculated and nonmatriculated
students at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels
and to persons working in the field of aging. The Faculty
Admissions Committee formally reviews and approves student
applications. Graduate certificate applicants must submit
documentation of completion of baccalaureate degree. Students
are admitted year-round and may begin course work at any
semester with advice from the Gerontology faculty. The best time
to begin the program is in Fall term by taking the introductory
course GERON 5001/6001. Certification requirements should
be completed within three (3) years of acceptance into the
program. Typically students can complete the program in
one year of full-time study (assuming summer session coursework).
Applicants need to:
- Complete and submit the Gerontology Certificate Program Admission form (available through the main office/591 College of Nursing University of Utah) and submit $15.00 processing fee along with the Gerontology Certificate Application Form.
- Submit an official copy of transcript(s).
- Meet with our academic advisor or faculty for consultation (can be conducted over the phone). 801-581-8198
CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
All undergraduate and graduate students must complete a total of 15 credit hours of core and elective gerontology course work including a 150 (clock) hour practicum, equivalent to 3 credit hours (please contact Dr. Michael Caserta for more information).
Undergraduate students register for 5000 level course numbers and graduate students register for 6000 level course numbers. Elective courses can be selected from an approved list of courses offered through the Center and from other University departments. The Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program requires:
A grade point average of 3.0 or better among the core and
elective courses a student takes ("A" = 4.0).
Students All Gerontology courses and electives that are counted toward the certificate must be completed with a letter grade of “C” or better (C- is not acceptable) and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for all courses counted toward the certificate.
Students are responsible for making sure that their files
are kept current in the Center office documenting the completion
of the courses and practicum requirements. A fact sheet
that describes the practicum process in more detail is included
in a handbook and additional copies are available in the
main office.
SPECIFIC CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
Matriculated students may earn the Certificate in Gerontology (awarded by the University which appears on the student transcript of grades) and non-matriculated students may earn the Gerontology Certificate of Completion. Matriculated students are those who have been officially admitted as a student working toward a University degree. Non-matriculated students can be admitted to the program and register for courses through the Division of Continuing Education. Graduate students are expected to complete their thesis, or dissertation on a topic related to aging.
