ADMISSION PROCEDURES
-
First step
Complete application to University of Utah Graduate School - Second step
Complete application to Gerontology Master's Degree program (read below for details).
Students must first be admitted to the Graduate School of the University of Utah and separately to the Gerontology Program. The admission process includes filing the Application for Admission to Graduate School with the University Admissions Office, 250 Student Services Building and the Gerontology Program in the College of Nursing. The University of Utah Graduate School Application Form needs to be obtained directly from that office and returned to that office no later than March 1, to be considered for our program. The deadline for application to the Gerontology Program is April 1 for summer session or Fall term admission. Decisions for admission into the Master's program are usually made by May 15. Graduate students seeking to begin in summer session must notify Coordinator of Graduate Studies with written statement by April 1.
Non-matriculated graduate students can transfer up to 9 credits hours toward the M.S. degree in Gerontology. Only 6 credits of undergraduate work may be applied toward M.S. degree, if it was not used to complete Baccalaureate requirements.
The following are requirements for admission to the Master of Science program in Gerontology:
- Baccalaureate degree, with GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Satisfactory achievement on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the past 5 years.
- A written statement of professional goals related to gerontology
and the selected area of gerontology specialization (see guidelines;
available Main Office).
Applicants must complete a separate Graduate Application form for the Gerontology Program with a $20.00 processing fee. (the fee can be waived if you have already paid a U of U Gerontology Certificate processing fee!) - Three personal/professional references. One Gerontology Program faculty member is permissible (other than the Director). Recommendations from outside the center are encouraged.
- An interview for the applicant may be requested by either faculty admissions committee or the applicant.
- International applicants must also complete the following:
- File an International Student Application for Admission, obtained from the International Admissions Office, 250 Student Services Building.
- Provide evidence of successful completion of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500(paper-based) or 173 (computer-based).
- An interview with the Gerontology Admissions Committee faculty also may be requested.
Efforts will be made to assure applicants are fairly evaluated for admission and assisted as needed throughout their program. Applicants who have taken courses as a non-matriculated student will be considered for admission on the same basis as other applicants. Registration for courses required for the MS degree in Gerontology prior to acceptance in the program does not assure admission to the program. The University of Utah does not allow students to count the credit hours from a course toward more than one degree. Students can earn a Gerontology Certificate and count some of the credits toward the M.S. degree if they did not count those same credits toward another University degree that was awarded.
To request a complete application packet, please contact Scott Wright, Ph.D., Director
of Graduate Studies (801) 581-8198.
You may also go to our "Application" web page and
print a copy of the Gerontology Master's Degree application
form to your local printer. $20.00 processing fee required
with each application. Note: You must still apply through
the University of Utah Graduate School and complete their
application form with their required fee.
