Any Gerontology student who intends to complete their practicum requirement in a health care setting, which includes but is not limited to long-term care settings, must be aware of the potential risk for coming into contact with blood borne pathogens such as hepatitis-B. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established policies for immunization and screening to which University Hospital and College of Nursing are presently conforming. Their application to gerontology practicum experiences are outlined below so that we can adhere to the policies of many of the health care facilities to which we sometimes send students.
Hepatitis-BIf you are planning to complete any of your practicum experience in a setting in which there is the likelihood of coming into contact with the hepatitis-B virus, you are strongly encouraged to obtain a vaccination. This is a series of three shots. These are available through the county health department as well as Student Health Services. There is a cost involved.
TuberculosisAnnual TB screening is mandatory at all health care facilities.
Tetanus/Polio; Measles, Mumps, RubellaImmunizations are highly recommended and many agencies may require documentation of immunization records, including appropriate boosters.
A copy of the policy is available for your review in the Gerontology Center Main Office. Also, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
